Committees

UNSC

The United Nations Security Council is one of the primary organs of the United Nations and is commissioned with perpetuating peace and international security. It comprises of 15 member, where 10 function as non-payment members for a period of 2 years, while five - China,France,Russia and United Kingdom, and the United States, serve as permanent members accredited with veto powers.

The Security Council takes the forefront in discerning the presence of a threat to the world peace or act of aggression. It calls upon the parties involved in the dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods of mutual settlement. In certain situations, the Security Council can resort to cutting off diplomatic ties and impose international sanctions or even permit the use of force to restore international amity and security.

Agendas:

  • To discuss the possible deployment of UN forces in DPRK to counter its continued threat to world security.
  • To discuss the status of Jerusalem amid the recent political and military tension.

UNHRC

“All victims of human rights abuses should be able to look to the Human Rights Council as a forum and a springboard for action.“ – Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary General, 2007.

The Human Rights Council is an organ which handles human rights violations in different parts of the globe. The UN-member nations try to collectively to find amicable solutions for the problems and work in order to prevent them from even coming into existence in the first place. Although there are many different cultures and aspects which shall be valued, there are universal basic rights such as, but not limited to, right to life, right to freedom, right to subsistence level and right to religious freedom which are supposed to be granted to all human beings without discrimination.The Council is made up of 47 United Nations Member States which are elected by the UN General Assembly.

Agendas:

  • To discuss the implications of the war crimes against the Yazidis and suggest measures to curb the human rights violations arising from the situation.
  • To assess the violence in the Northern Triangle and suggest measures to establish stability in the region.

DISEC

The Disarmament and International Security Committee is the the very first committee of the General Assembly, formed in 1945, DISEC, is deputed to advice on vital matters of international security and disarmament, and serves as a convention for the international community to discourse matters pertaining to creating and maintaining global security and amity. Since its inception, DISEC has dealt with dangers to international security in places all over the world. Moreover, agreements in the DISEC has lead to the formation of nearly all international treaties regarding disarmament. DISEC's primary role is in preserving and ensuring global security as well as its numerous recommendations for peacekeeping missions to the UN Security Council are vital for the international community.

Agendas:

  • To discuss the role of Private Military & Security Companies in conflict zones
  • To discuss Russian militarization of Kaliningrad and its potential to turn into a Russian nuclear bastion against the NATO.

ECOFIN

The Economic and Financial Committee, also known as ECOFIN, is the Second Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. Their mandate is to address matters pertaining to financial growth, development, and macroeconomics.

ECOFIN also looks into matters such as financing for development, sustainable development, poverty eradication, globalization, and interdependence. This committee's objective is to adjudicate economic growth and development, focusing on that related to the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
The committee convenes yearly subsequent with the meeting of the General Assembly.

Agendas:

  • To discuss the economic viability and international effects of protectionism, with special emphasis on the recent events in Europe and the Americas.
  • Discussing ‘Neo- Colonialism’ and its implications on the world economy.

UN Women

The United Nations General Assembly established the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women that refers to UN Women in July 2010 in order to draw the focus and impact of the gender equality activities within the UN. UN Women emphasizes on special programmes to eradicate the challenges to gender equality. These programmes consists of leadership and political participation, economic empowerment, ending violence against women, humanitarian action, youth, governance and national planning, HIV and AIDS.

Overall UN Women promoted international political negotiations to implement the international standards for gender equality and financially supports and provides assistance to global gender mainstreaming measures.

Agendas:

  • To assess the status of security of women in conflict regions and implement measures to ensure the same.
  • To discuss the status of a women's right to abortion and formulating a course of action for the same.

UNCSTD

The Commission on Science and Technology for Development is a subsidiary organization of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Formed in 1992, the CSTD has provided the General Assembly and ECOSOC with sophisticated insight on relevant issues through policy recommendations. It serves as the UN’s forum for discussion of science and technology, the Commission aims to develop goals and policy to promote progress throughout the world, especially in developing nations.The CSTD has focused on newly emerging technologies, establishing infrastructure to foster development, and promoting employment in newly forming sectors of the economy.

Agendas:

  • To discuss the regulation of Artificial Intelligence with special emphasis on its profound impact in Intellectual Property.
  • To discuss militarisation of cyberspace.

OIC

The Organization of Islamic Co-operation, earlier known as the Organization of Islamic Conference, is said to be the ‘Collective Voice of the Muslim World’. At present, the organization has 57 member states, which has a collective population of 1.6 billion, and is the second largest inter-governmental organization, after the UN.

The OIC focuses to preserve Islamic socio-economic values, foster solidarity amongst its member nations, increase cooperation in cultural, political and scientific spheres, and uphold international peace and security.The OIC has been responsible for dealing with a number of issues that are pertinent to the Islamic community ranging from human rights violations, to combating terrorism.

Agendas:

  • To assess the prevalent violent sectarian extremism in the Middle East and suggest measures to combat the same.
  • To discuss the situation of Uighur Muslims in the People’s Republic of China.

Historic meeting of NATO and Warsaw Pact

In the late 1970s, new generations of nuclear missile delivery systems were proposed for deployment across Eastern and Western Europe. The ensuing controversy over their deployment grew into a key phase in the later years of the Cold War.The North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Warsaw Pact Countries met in the 1970’s to late 1980’s to work out a series of negotiations and agreements for the disarmament of these weapons and bring an end to the Cold War.

The NATO Double-Track Decision is the decision of NATO from December 12, 1979, to offer the Warsaw Pact a mutual limitation of medium-range ballistic missiles and intermediate-range ballistic missiles combined with the threat that in case of disagreement NATO would deploy more middle-range nuclear weapons in Western Europe, following the so-called "Euromissile Crisis".

Agenda:

  • To assess the Euromissile Crisis and adopt measures to resolve the same.

SPECPOL

The Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly is the Special Political and Decolonization Committee. The committee was initially bifurcated into two separate committees: the Decolonization Committee and the Special Political Committee. The committee consists of all 193 Member States, all with the intention of helping previously colonized developing countries decrease their dependency on their former colonizers. The aim of the committee is to help more countries become independent, self-sufficient, and to free them of their troubling history.

Agendas:

  • To discuss the demilitarization of the Arctic Circle.
  • To discuss the ongoing Indo-China border disputes along the Line of Actual Control and the McMahon Line.

UNDP

The United Nations Development Programme functions in nearly 170 countries and territories, aimed at the eradication of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion.It supports nations to develop policies, leadership abilities, partnering skills, institutional capabilities and build resilience in order to sustain development results. Through focusing on encouraging cooperation in fields including HIV/AIDS, democratic governance, social development, and crisis recovery; the UNDP has brought countries together to employ policies that enhance global levels of human development as a whole.The primary benefactors in this committee are the developing nations. One of its main goals is also working on how to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Agendas:

  • To suggest measures to improve post disaster relief programs in the light of recent natural calamities in North and Central America.
  • To discuss the progress of countries on meeting the sustainable development goals.
